What clients ask us

Tap a question below. Exact details are always confirmed during your consultation.

Do I need an appointment for a custom tattoo?

Appointments are strongly recommended for custom tattoos at Rose and Crown Tattoos, though walk-ins are welcome when an artist has availability. Custom work requires design time, and your artist may need a day or two to draw your piece before the tattoo session. Booking ahead guarantees your artist blocks out enough time and is not double-booked. You can call 737-222-5355 or use our Contact Form to schedule a free consultation first, then book your tattoo session separately. Same-day custom tattoos are sometimes possible for small, simple designs if an artist has an open slot. For larger pieces, plan at least two visits: one for the consult and design approval, and one or more for the actual tattoo.

What should I bring to my custom tattoo consultation?

Bring reference images, even if they are just photos from your phone or Pinterest saves. Write down any text you want included, exact placement on your body, and your size preference in inches if you know it. If you have allergies or skin conditions, mention those upfront. Bring a valid ID if you are getting tattooed the same day. Wear clothing that lets your artist see the area you want tattooed. Do not worry about having a finished design. Most clients arrive with a rough idea, and our artists shape it into something that works as a tattoo.

How do I book a custom tattoo consultation in Kyle?

Call Rose and Crown Tattoos at 737-222-5355 or use our Contact to book your free custom tattoo consultation. We are open Tuesday 10am to 4pm and Wednesday through Saturday, 11am to 7pm. Tell us your idea, preferred artist if you have one, and general availability. You can also walk in and ask about consultation openings, though calling ahead saves time. In-person consultations happen at 616 S Old Stagecoach Rd. If you are outside the area or would prefer to do a video consultation, please let us know. There is no fee for consultations and you are under no obligation to book at that time.

Is Rose and Crown Tattoos walk-in friendly for custom tattoos?

We welcome walk-ins Tuesday 10am to 4pm and Wednesday through Saturday, 11am to 7pm. However, custom tattoos usually need design prep that walk-in slots do not always allow. If you walk in with a simple custom idea and an artist has time, we will do our best to help. For anything beyond a small piece, booking an appointment gives you the best result. Call 737-222-5355 to check same-day availability. Private driveway parking means even a walk-in visit is low-stress. You can also book a free consultation instead if the schedule allows.

How old do I need to be to get a custom tattoo in Texas?

Texas law requires you to be 18 or older to get a tattoo. Rose and Crown Tattoos checks valid government-issued photo ID for every client, no exceptions. We do not tattoo minors, even with parental consent. Bring your driver's license, state ID, passport, or military ID. If your ID is expired, we cannot proceed. This policy protects you and our shop. If you are visiting from out of town near Kyle or San Marcos, your home state ID works as long as it is current and shows your date of birth.

How much does a custom tattoo cost in Kyle, TX?

Custom tattoo pricing depends on size, detail, and placement. Small custom pieces start at our shop minimum. Medium work on your forearm or calf might run $200 to $400. Larger custom tattoos like a full sleeve or back piece are priced by the session or at an hourly rate your artist quotes during your free consultation. Your artist gives you a clear estimate during the design phase. For ballpark ranges before you book, use our Pricing Tool. Price factors include detail, shading, and session length. Custom work almost always benefits from a booked appointment so your artist has time to draw.

How long does a custom tattoo take?

A small custom tattoo might take one to two hours. A medium piece on your upper arm or thigh could take three to five hours. Large custom work like a half sleeve or full back piece takes multiple sessions spaced weeks apart so your skin can heal. Your artist gives you a time estimate at your consultation. Some designs need a second session for shading or color packing even if the outline is done in one sitting. While artists gain speed as they become more experienced, our goal is quality tattoos that look good for years. So plan your day accordingly and eat a good meal before longer sessions.

Can I see my custom design before tattoo day?

Every artist handles design previews a little differently. Some share a drawing at your consultation or send it before appointment day; others prefer to finalize the design closer to your session. Bring your questions and concerns to your consultation so you and your artist can align on placement, size, and details before tattoo day. Once the session begins, major changes are harder to make without rescheduling.

Do you offer payment plans for large custom tattoos?

Payment for custom tattoos is typically per session. Large pieces like sleeves or back tattoos are broken into multiple appointments, so you pay as you go rather than all at once. We accept standard payment methods available at the shop. Talk to your artist during your consultation about how many sessions your project needs and what each session costs. Transparent pricing is part of our process. We want you to plan your budget without surprises. There is no formal financing program, but spreading work across sessions naturally breaks up the cost.

What if I need to reschedule my custom tattoo appointment?

Life happens. Call us at 737-222-5355 as soon as you know you need to reschedule your custom tattoo appointment. We ask for at least 48 hours notice when possible so your artist can offer the slot to another client. We collect a deposit for every tattoo appointment. Same-day cancellations may forfeit your deposit. We are flexible for emergencies and illness. Rescheduling is easy by phone or e-mailing your artist. Your custom design stays on file, so you do not start over when you pick a new date.

What tattoo styles do your artists offer for custom work?

Our five artists cover a wide range of styles for custom tattoos. Betty Rose specializes in neo-traditional, Japanese-influenced work, and lettering. Daniel Whalen focuses on black and grey, fine line, and realism. Shannon Moxie does traditional, folk art, and Japanese-influenced work. Amanda Boyd creates illustrative and neo-traditional pieces with strong black and grey work. Jordan Joyes brings illustrative, floral, and black and grey designs. Before your free consultation, we can help you match with the artist whose portfolio best fits your idea. If your concept blends styles, we will tell you who handles that mix best.

Can I get a custom tattoo with color?

Absolutely. Betty Rose, Shannon Moxie, Amanda Boyd, and Jordan Joyes all work with color. Daniel prefers to work with black and grey, but will add color if that's your preference. Color custom tattoos need bold saturation to heal well, and our artists know how to pack color for longevity. Your artist helps you choose a palette that fits your skin tone and the style you want. Neo-traditional and Japanese custom pieces often use rich reds, greens, and gold tones. Illustrative and floral custom work can be full color or muted depending on your taste.

Can you cover up an old tattoo with a custom design?

Yes. Cover-up tattoos are a form of custom work, and several of our artists handle them well. Daniel Whalen and Jordan Joyes are especially strong with black and grey cover-ups. Shannon Moxie and Betty Rose handle color and traditional cover-ups. Bring photos of your existing tattoo to your consultation. Your artist assesses whether a cover-up is realistic. Cover-ups usually need to be larger and darker than the original tattoo. We are honest about what is possible so you do not end up disappointed. Custom cover-up designs take extra planning time.

What kind of ink do you use for custom tattoos?

Rose and Crown Tattoos uses professional-grade inks your artist selects for your piece. We choose colors that complement your complexion and make your design look its best. That includes trusted brands like Eternal when they fit your project, along with other quality inks depending on the style and your skin. Ask your artist during your consultation if you have specific ink concerns or sensitivities.

How do I care for my custom tattoo after the session?

Your artist sends you home with aftercare instructions and an open door if you need us. Keep the bandage on for the time your artist recommends, usually a few hours. Wash gently with fragrance-free soap and pat dry. Apply a thin layer of recommended ointment or lotion. Avoid swimming, direct sun, and soaking the tattoo for at least two weeks. Do not pick scabs or scratch healing skin. Wear loose clothing over the area. Rose and Crown offers free touch-ups within six months on shop work if anything needs adjustment after healing. Call us if you see signs of infection, though that is rare with proper care.
