Neo-trad vs traditional

  • Traditional: limited classic palette, simpler shapes, less interior shading
  • Neo-trad: same bold outlines, wider color range, more detail and texture
  • Traditional: eagle, rose, and anchor icons built for decades of clarity
  • Neo-trad: animal portraits, ornamental backgrounds, and modern subjects with classic structure
  • Both heal well when lines are bold. Neo-trad color packing takes longer in the chair

What clients ask us

Tap a question below. Exact details are always confirmed during your consultation.

What is a neo-traditional tattoo?

A neo-traditional tattoo uses bold black outlines and solid color fills like classic American traditional, but with more detail, depth, and a wider color range. Subjects include animals, portraits, flowers, skulls, insects, and fantasy themes rendered with decorative shading and ornamental backgrounds. Lines are thicker than fine line but cleaner than pure illustration. Neo-traditional tattoos read clearly from a distance and hold up for years when color is packed properly and aftercare is followed.

How much does a neo-traditional tattoo cost?

Pricing depends on size, color amount, and session length. Small neo-trad pieces like a dagger or animal head often start at $150 to $250. Medium work on forearm or calf runs $250 to $450. Large sleeves or thigh pieces are priced per session or hourly, typically $150 to $200 per hour. Color packing takes extra time compared to black outline only. Betty Rose gives clear quotes at your free consultation. For ballpark ranges before you visit, use our tattoo pricing tool, then confirm at your consult.

Should I book with Betty or Amanda?

Betty Rose is our lead neo-traditional artist. Her portfolio shows bold animals, female portraits, skulls, and ornamental neo-trad with saturated color. Amanda Boyd handles illustrative neo-traditional with gallery-influenced compositions and black and grey neo-trad variants. Book a free consultation to review portfolios on iPad or in printed books. Tell us your subject and we will confirm who fits best, or you can request a specific artist when you call.

Does neo-traditional have to be in color?

Neo-traditional tattoos usually include color, but black and grey neo-trad is popular too. Betty Rose and Amanda Boyd both tattoo neo-traditional pieces with grey wash instead of saturated reds and greens. Color neo-trad is the classic look most clients request. Your artist explains how black and grey neo-trad ages versus bold color during your consultation so you can pick what fits your taste and placement.

How long does a neo-traditional tattoo take?

Small neo-traditional tattoos take one to two hours. Medium forearm pieces with color packing take three to five hours. Large neo-traditional sleeves need multiple sessions spaced for healing. Color packing adds time after the outline is done. Betty Rose works efficiently but never rushes saturation. Your artist estimates session count at your free consultation so you can plan your day and budget.

Can neo-traditional cover an old tattoo?

Neo-traditional cover-ups work when the new piece is larger and uses bold dark outlines and saturated color to hide old ink. Betty Rose assesses cover-up options during free consultations. Heavy black outlines and color packing help mask older tattoos. Some cover-ups need laser fading first. We are direct about what is realistic. Neo-traditional cover-ups are custom priced like any detailed color piece. Bring photos of your current tattoo and what you want instead.

Are walk-ins accepted for neo-traditional tattoos?

Walk-ins are welcome Tuesday 10am to 4pm and Wednesday through Saturday, 11am to 7pm. Small neo-traditional flash or simple designs may fit walk-in slots when Betty Rose has availability. Custom neo-trad color pieces should be booked ahead for stencil prep and longer sessions. Call 737-222-5355 before you drive over to confirm same-day openings. Private driveway parking makes walk-in visits easy when the schedule allows.

How do I care for my neo-traditional tattoo?

Your artist sends you home with our Extended Wear aftercare sheet. Keep the film on for three to five days unless your artist says otherwise. Remove it gently under running water and fragrance-free liquid soap. Wash with your hands, pat dry, and apply a thin layer of fragrance-free moisturizer. Your tattoo should not look wet. Wash daily for the next two to three weeks, and again if it gets dirty. Moisturize daily during that same window, but do not overuse lotion. Avoid swimming, direct sun, and soaking until healed. Do not pick scabs or scratch healing skin. Color neo-traditional may peel in visible color flakes during healing week. Free touch-ups within six months on shop work fix patchy color spots. SPF on healed work keeps saturation longer.

Is neo-traditional good for a first tattoo?

Neo-traditional is a solid first tattoo style. Bold outlines heal clearly and color blocks stay readable as you learn aftercare habits. We guide first-timers through free consultations with honest pain and placement talk. Texas requires valid photo ID and age 18 plus. Start with a size your artist recommends so your first neo-trad ages well. Betty's chair is friendly for nervous clients. You are not rushed into going bigger than you want.
